On Feb. 28, 1976, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz set sail from the Canary Islands in the sailing yacht Mazurek. A little more than two years later, on April 21, 1978, she returned to the Canary Islands, having accomplished what no woman before her had: sailing solo around the world. A trained naval engineer, she was well-prepared for the voyage, in skills and in attitude. “I’m not afraid of the unknown,” she said. “I could not imagine what might happen to me during this trip, so I was calm.”
