The standard ophthalmologist’s eye chart is called a Snellen chart — named for Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen who introduced it in 1862. Starting with the big E at the top, the chart displays combinations of nine letters — C, D, E, F, L, O, P, T, Z — in rows of decreasing size. Snellen also created the “tumbling E” chart for patients unfamiliar with the Latin alphabet. Rather than reading the chart, patients simply point to indicate the direction the E is facing.
