The word sybaritic, meaning luxurious or indulgent, comes from the ancient Greek city Sybaris. Known for the luxurious lifestyle of its residents, Sybaris is reputed to have enacted the first noise ordinance in recorded history, back in the 6th century B.C. It required artisans and tradesmen to do their noisy work outside the city limits. Even roosters who crowed at sunrise were banned so as not to disturb the Sybarites’ peace of mind.
