The return of the low-rise jean, as ushered in by Julia Fox, Zoe Kravitz, and a slew of other celebrities tasked with cherry-picking trends of the past to define 2022's concept of "hotness," has been nothing if not terrifying to the masses. How can we be expected to wriggle back into those hip-bisecting, crack-revealing denim casings after having lived through the trauma the first time around?
But alas, just when we had finally given in to this ominous second-coming, Jennifer Lopez goes ahead and threatens us with not one, but two more blast-from-the-past jeans trends that made us cower in fear.
On a stroll through Los Angeles with boo Ben Affleck, Lopez boggled minds in a pair of BOOTCUT jeans with EXPOSED BUTTONS. The humanity! Despite us as a society overcoming the indignities of skinny jeans to land on timeless and forgiving straight-leg styles as the current best-selling denim silhouette, the trend cycle refuses to find equilibrium, and instead insists on dredging up the most reviled apparel mistakes of our past. Bootcut? You mean the jeans with too-tight tops and too-loose hems that get infallibly shredded after just a day kicking about in those excessive lengths?
Of course, the most maddening part is that J.Lo looks amazing, as always. So much so, that we're seriously considering letting exposed-button jeans back into our lives, despite the cage-like sensation we distinctly recall retiring many years ago.
Are we losing our minds? Quite possibly yes. But we never thought we'd cave for skinny jeans' resurrection either, and yet here we are. Who's to say J.Lo hasn't just ID'ed the next once-hated trend about to re-sweep the zeitgeist?
