Most of the so-called trained seals that perform in circus acts aren’t true seals; they’re sea lions. There are three ways to tell. True seals don’t have earflaps; sea lions do. True seals have smaller front flippers and belly-crawl on land; sea lions have stronger front flippers and flexible hind flippers that let them “walk” on land. True seals making relatively quiet grunting noises; sea lions bark and bellow.
