The construction of Hoover Dam, which began in 1931, is considered to be the first major building project in the United States in which employers required workers to wear protective “hard hats” on the job. Soon after, the Golden Gate Bridge construction site became the country’s first official designated “Hard Hat Area.” Credit for developing hard hats for industrial use in the U.S. goes to Edward D. Bullard, whose company began making protective helmets for miners in 1919, inspired by the “doughboy” helmets worn by soldiers in World War I.
