Excellent question. A long, long time ago, before the invention of television or the birth of Shakespeare, people would watch the stars for their nighttime entertainment. The Greeks and the Romans before them (and the Babylonians, the Egyptians, the Chinese, the Druids and, well, everyone in ancient history) used the stars as inspiration to create stories about how the world was born, how the universe works and all of the exciting things that might have happened to make things the way they were. Ancient Romans saw an interesting object in the sky at sunrise and they called it Apollo. They called a similar interesting object visible at sunset “Hermes.” It’s likely that they had some stories about these characters and they continued to develop the stories as they watched the sky. Later, they found out that this wasn’t two objects but one object. And the mythology around Mercury is largely taken from Hermes.
