The Joffrey Ballet’s 2022-23 season includes the Chicago premiere of John Neumeier’s “The Little Mermaid” and a new work by choreographer Chanel DaSilva. Several acclaimed revivals are also in the mix, including Yuri Possokhov’s “Anna Karenina” and Christopher Wheeldon’s “The Nutcracker.”
“Over the last several years, the Joffrey has striven to curate performances that speak to our ambitions, provide a voice to rising choreographic talent and reach audiences everywhere,” said Joffrey Ballet artistic director Ashley Wheater in a statement. “We are committed to artistic excellence and a Joffrey for All, part of our mission to ensure that dance is for everyone.”
The season opens with a mixed program called “Beyond Borders” for 10 performances Oct. 12-23. The repertory includes DaSilva’s yet-to-be-titled world premiere, plus revivals of Gerald Arpino’s “Suite Saint-Saëns” and Liam Scarlett’s “Vespertine.”
Possokhov’s award-winning 2019 adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel “Anna Karenina” is revived for 10 performances Feb. 15-26, 2023.
“The Little Mermaid” by choreographer John Neumeier finally makes its Chicago debut with 10 performances April 19-30, 2023. It was originally scheduled for the canceled 2020-21 season. The ballet, which was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s tragic tale, is not advised for kids younger than 12.
Christopher Wheeldon’s Chicago-inspired version of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” is also set to return for 25 performances Dec. 3-27.
