You probably wore a pair of Adidas Sambas to soccer practice in high school. Now, Ashley Olsen is wearing them on her Starbucks coffee run in what we could only presume is an outfit that costs more than our apartments. Basically, the soccer sneaker is coming back in a big way in 2022. Forget what you knew about your old soccer uniform — you can wear these sneakers with anything, even head-to-toe The Row.
British-Jamaican menswear designer Grace Wales Bonner designed a crocheted version of the shoe, along with a version with green stripes and laces, early last year. Then, GQ reported on the shoe's increasing popularity among menswear style icons like Jonah Hill and Paul Mescal. Bella Hadid has also been on the Samba train since April, and the shoe has slowly been showing up on all of our TikTok fit checks since then. Ashley Olsen's endorsement feels like the final step before the Adidas Samba becomes a bona fide fashion sneaker.
We're more than here for it. Not only is the shoe under $100 (and currently on sale for nearly half that at Amazon) but it's also perfectly sporty, subtle and un-fussy, as all sneakers should be. And the standard black with white stripes colorway feels like a nice divergence from the overly saturated plain white sneaker everyone already owns. Clearly others agree, since the Adidas Samba is currently sold out at Nordstrom and Zappos, with only some sizes left on Amazon.
